Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between 5069-TD001 and 5069-TD0020?
5069-TD001 (this document) covers Compact 5000 I/O modules — the digital, analog, safety, and specialty modules on the 5069 backplane. 5069-TD0020 is a separate publication for the CompactLogix 5380, Compact GuardLogix 5380, and CompactLogix 5480 controllers themselves (catalog numbers 5069-L3*ER, L4*ERMW). Both documents share bulletin 5069 because the controllers and I/O use the same backplane system, but they're different product families with different datasheets.
Can Compact 5000 I/O be used as remote I/O over EtherNet/IP?
Yes. The 5069-AENTR / 5069-AENTRK / 5069-AEN2TR EtherNet/IP adapters support a system of Compact 5000 I/O modules as remote I/O over EtherNet/IP. The adapter provides backplane power, MOD power passthrough (up to 9.78 A), and SA power passthrough to the I/O modules. DLR (Device Level Ring) is supported on all three adapters for media redundancy. The 5069-AEN2TR is the second-generation adapter with a USB port, higher MOD current (450 mA vs 220 mA), and more slot width (4.5 vs 3).
When do I need a 5069-FPD Field Potential Distributor?
Three scenarios require a 5069-FPD: (1) mixing AC and DC SA power in the same system — the FPD isolates the two SA power buses; (2) when the system draws more than 10 A from one SA power bus — adding an FPD starts a new SA bus; (3) Compact GuardLogix 5380 controllers cannot supply AC SA power, so AC modules (like 5069-IA16, 5069-OA16) cannot be installed directly next to the controller — install an FPD between the controller and the first AC module to establish the AC SA bus.
Do I need to order the RTB (terminal block) separately?
Yes. RTBs do not ship with Compact 5000 I/O modules; you must order them separately. Most digital and analog modules use 5069-RTB18-SPRING or 5069-RTB18-SCREW. Modules with RTD/TC inputs (IY4, IY4K) also need 5069-RTB14CJC-SPRING or -SCREW cold-junction-compensation RTBs when at least one thermocouple is connected. Adapters use 5069-RTB4 / RTB5 / RTB6 depending on variant. Check the wiring specifications table for the correct RTB per catalog number.
What's the difference between the 5069-IB16, 5069-IB16F, and 5069-IB6F-3W?
All three are DC sinking inputs. 5069-IB16 is a standard 16-point input with 0-500 Hz counter frequency (inv period 2 ms), 50 µs hardware filter delay, and 60 µs minimum pulse width. 5069-IB16F is the fast variant — 16 points, 0-30 kHz counter (inv period 33.3 µs), 2-3 µs hardware delay, 6 µs minimum pulse width, with CIP Sync timestamping, pulse latching, pattern matching, field power loss detection, and event triggering. 5069-IB6F-3W is a 6-point 3-wire variant that provides V+/V-/signal per channel (for 3-wire proximity sensors) at the same 30 kHz fast speed.
What does the 5069-ARM address reserve module do?
The 5069-ARM module reserves a slot position in the Compact 5000 I/O system for a future I/O module. It holds the electronic-keying slot address so the logic program does not need to be modified when the real module is added later. 5069-ARM draws 45 mA MOD power and 9.55 A MOD passthrough, passes SA power through (does not draw SA current), and requires a 5069-RTB18 RTB like a standard 1-slot module.
Is Compact 5000 I/O rated for Class I Division 2 hazardous locations?
Yes. All standard Compact 5000 I/O modules are UL-listed for Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, and D (UL File E334470). ATEX and IECEx certifications extend coverage to Zone 2 gas atmospheres under IEC 60079-15 (Protection "n"), with DEMKO 15 ATEX 1484X and UL22UKEX2379X certificates. The 5069-OW4I, 5069-OW16, and 5069-OX4I relay modules have their own UL E334470 listing and temperature code T4 across North American, UKEx/ATEX, and IECEx schemes.
