Power Types in Compact 5000 I/O System

Module (MOD) power System-side power used to operate a local or remote system; passes across a MOD power bus
Sensor Actuator (SA) power Field-side power some modules use to power field-side devices; passes across an SA power bus
Local Actuator (LA) power Field-side power used by some modules instead of SA power; modules using LA power do not draw from SA power bus but pass it to the next module

Communication Protocols

Supported industrial networks and field buses for the products covered by this publication.

EtherNet/IP Supported by both Compact I/O and Compact 5000 I/O. Compact 5000 adapters support up to 1000 Mbps, DLR, linear, and star topologies, and CIP Safety, CIP Motion, and CIP Security applications. DeviceNet Supported by Compact I/O via 1769-ADN and 1769-SDN. Compact 5000 supports DeviceNet via 5069-SDN (available through Softing Inc.). Migration from DeviceNet to EtherNet/IP is recommended; 1788-EN2DNR linking device can bridge networks if immediate migration is not possible. Serial / Modbus RTU Compact I/O 1769-ASCII and 1769-SM2 migrate to Compact 5000 5069-SERIAL module. HART Compact 5000 I/O supports HART communication via select analog I/O modules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which controllers does the Compact 5000 I/O system support?
The Compact 5000 I/O family supports the following controllers: CompactLogix 5380 (local and remote I/O), Compact GuardLogix 5380 (local and remote I/O), CompactLogix 5480 (local and remote I/O), ControlLogix 5580 (remote I/O), and GuardLogix 5580 (remote I/O).
How many modules can a single Compact 5000 EtherNet/IP adapter support?
A single Compact 5000 EtherNet/IP adapter supports up to 31 modules in one bank. No expansion cables are required.
What network types does the Compact 5000 I/O system support compared to Compact I/O?
Compact I/O supports DeviceNet, EtherNet/IP, Serial, DPI/SCANport, and Modbus RTU. Compact 5000 I/O supports EtherNet/IP, Serial, and HART. Rockwell Automation recommends migrating existing DeviceNet networks to EtherNet/IP. If an immediate DeviceNet migration is not possible, the 1788-EN2DNR linking device can bridge the networks.
What is the 5069-FPD field potential distributor used for?
The 5069-FPD field potential distributor breaks the field-side power distribution in a Compact 5000 I/O system and creates a new SA power bus. It is required when AC-type and DC-type modules must be isolated from each other, when the SA power bus collectively draws more than 10 A, or when AC-type modules are used with a Compact GuardLogix 5380 controller that does not supply AC SA power. The 5069-FPD passes MOD power bus signals to the next module and does not occupy a logic slot in the controller program.
Do RTBs ship with Compact 5000 I/O modules?
No. RTBs do not ship with Compact 5000 I/O modules and must be ordered separately. They are available in spring-type and screw-type. The required RTB type depends on the module: standard and safety I/O modules use the 5069-RTB18-SCREW or 5069-RTB18-SPRING, while EtherNet/IP adapters use the 5069-RTB5-SCREW or 5069-RTB5-SPRING.
Are there Compact I/O modules that have no direct Compact 5000 I/O replacement?
Yes. For example, the 1769-IA8I, 1769-IA8IK, 1769-IG16, 1769-OG16, and 1769-BOOLEAN modules have no direct Compact 5000 I/O equivalent. In some cases, alternative modules or multiple modules may be used to approximate the functionality, as detailed in the migration tables in this manual.
What minimum Studio 5000 Logix Designer version is required for Compact 5000 standard I/O with CompactLogix 5380?
It depends on the controller catalog number. For standard I/O, version 28.00.00 or later applies to controllers such as 5069-L320ER and 5069-L340ERM, version 29.00.00 or later to controllers such as 5069-L310ERS2 and 5069-L330ER, and version 30.00.00 or later to 5069-L350ERM, 5069-L380ERM, and 5069-L3100ERM. The manual's compatibility table lists every catalog number.
