Frequently Asked Questions
Which device variants are covered by this operating instructions document?
The instructions cover all devices of the SCALANCE X-200 and XF-200 product groups, including X204-2, X204-2TS, X204-2FM, X204-2LD, X204-2LD TS, X206-1, X206-1LD, X208, X208PRO, X212-2, X212-2LD, X216, X224, XF204, XF204-2, XF206-1, XF208, and all X-200IRT and XF-200IRT variants including PRO models.
What transmission rates and topologies do the SCALANCE X-200 switches support?
The X-200 IE switches support transmission rates of 10/100 Mbps and are suited for Industrial Ethernet networks in bus, star, and ring structures. X-200IRT variants additionally support isochronous real-time (IRT) communication using a combination of cut-through and store-and-forward switching methods.
How is the C-PLUG used and what does it store?
The C-PLUG is an exchangeable storage medium for configuration and project engineering data of the basic device. If an empty C-PLUG is inserted, all configuration data is saved to it at startup. When replacing a failed device, the C-PLUG from the old device is inserted into the replacement device, which then starts with the same configuration. The C-PLUG must be inserted and removed only when power is off.
What installation methods are available for the X-200 IE switches?
X-200 IE switches can be installed on a 35 mm DIN rail complying with DIN EN 60715, on a SIMATIC S7-300 standard rail, or by wall mounting. XF devices (flat design) can only be installed on a 35 mm DIN rail. A minimum clearance of 10 cm above and below the device must be maintained for convection ventilation.
What power supply voltage is required and is redundant supply supported?
The standard supply voltage is 24 VDC (TS devices accept 12 to 24 VDC). Most X-200 variants support redundant power supply via two isolated inputs with no load distribution; the supply with the higher output voltage supplies the device alone. IRT PRO variants (X201-3P IRT PRO, X202-2P IRT PRO, X204IRT PRO) do not have a redundant power supply.
What protocols are available for device management and which are recommended for secure use?
Available management protocols include SSH (TCP/22), HTTPS (TCP/443), HTTP (TCP/80), Telnet (TCP/23), SNMP (UDP/161), SNTP/NTP (UDP/123), DHCP, and TFTP. The document recommends using SSH instead of Telnet, HTTPS instead of HTTP, FTPS instead of TFTP, NTP instead of SNTP, and SNMPv3 instead of SNMPv1/v2c to ensure encrypted and authenticated communication.
What approvals do the SCALANCE X-200 switches hold?
The devices hold CE, UL (UL 60950-1), CSA (CSA C22.2 No. 60950-1-03 and No. 142-1987), FM (Class I Division 2 Groups A-D; Class I Zone 2 Group IIC), ATEX and IECEx approvals for selected optical variants, FDA and IEC CLASS 1 LASER Product certification for optical devices, and railway standard EN 50155 approval for TS variants. TS variants also meet DIN EN 45545-2+A1 fire protection requirements.
