Frequently Asked Questions

Which safety functions are available as basic functions on SINAMICS G120 converters?
The basic functions available are Safe Torque Off (STO), Safe Brake Control (SBC), and Safe Stop 1 (SS1) without speed monitoring. STO is available on every converter family covered. SBC and SS1 are available with CU250S-2 Control Units. Each converter described in the manual has one or several of the basic functions.
What extended safety functions does SINAMICS G120 support and what hardware is required?
Extended functions include SS1 with speed monitoring, Safely Limited Speed (SLS), Safe Direction (SDI), and Safe Speed Monitor (SSM). These functions require a Control Unit with an "F" designation, such as CU240E-2 F, CU240E-2 DP-F, CU240E-2 PN-F, or CU250S-2 variants. For SINAMICS G120 with a CU250S-2 Control Unit, a license is also required for the extended functions.
How can safety functions be selected on SINAMICS G120 converters?
Safety functions can be selected via failsafe digital inputs (F-DI) using two-channel wiring, or via PROFIsafe secure fieldbus communication over PROFINET or PROFIBUS. A failsafe digital output (F-DO) is also available on certain Control Units. PROFIsafe uses Telegram 30 or Telegram 900, where Telegram 900 additionally feeds back the status of the failsafe digital inputs.
Is an encoder required to use the Safety Integrated functions?
No. The safety functions integrated in the drive do not use an encoder. The functions operate without an encoder for actual value sensing. If an encoder is connected for closed-loop motor control, the safety functions ignore the encoder signal and use encoderless actual value sensing.
What applications are not permitted when using encoderless safety functions?
Encoderless safety functions must not be used in applications involving pulling loads, such as hoisting gear, elevators, and unwinders. The encoderless actual value sensing cannot identify whether a pulling load undesirably accelerates the drive due to a fault in the closed-loop motor control. For such applications, a drive with encoder-based safety functions (e.g. SINAMICS S120) or speed monitoring in the higher-level control system should be used instead.
What is the difference between EMERGENCY STOP and EMERGENCY OFF, and which safety functions apply?
EMERGENCY OFF minimizes the risk of electric shock by switching off the power supply, while EMERGENCY STOP minimizes the risk of unexpected motion. STO and SS1 are only suitable for implementing EMERGENCY STOP. STO corresponds to Stop Category 0 and SS1 corresponds to Stop Category 1. STO and SS1 are not suitable for switching off an electrical voltage and cannot replace EMERGENCY OFF.
What certifications apply to the SINAMICS G120 Safety Integrated functions?
For STO via the terminals of the PM240-2 and PM240P-2 Power Modules, the level is Category 3 / PL e to EN ISO 13849-1 and SIL 3 to IEC 61508. All other safety functions of the G115D, G120, G120C and G120D are Category 3 / PL d and SIL 2. A test institute certifies each released firmware version with an EC type-examination certificate.
