Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between DC Micro (M12) and Pico (M8) cordsets?
DC Micro uses the M12 thread (12 mm) and is the industrial standard for 4 A, 250V sensor and network connections — available with 3, 4, 5, or 8 pins in 18 or 22 AWG. Pico uses the smaller M8 thread (8 mm) with 3 or 4 pins in 24 AWG, rated 60V AC / 75V DC at 4 A. Pico fits sensors in tight spaces where an M12 connector won't clear; DC Micro is preferred anywhere the additional current capacity, shielding options, or IO-Link/safety/EtherNet-IP keying is required. Bulletin 889 includes Pico-to-Micro patchcords (889D-F4ABD4M-2 and similar) for mixing the two.
Which cordset is right for IP69K washdown applications?
Any molded Mini, DC Micro, or AC Micro cordset in this publication is rated NEMA 6P / IP67 and 1200 psi (8270 kPa) washdown / IP69K — that covers most food-and-beverage and pharmaceutical cleaning cycles. For maximum chemical compatibility in caustic washdown, pick a PUR jacket (889D-F4UC-2) or ToughLink TPE (889D-F4HC-2). PVC is acceptable for general washdown but ToughLink has better resistance to alkaline cleaners and bleach per the General Chemicals table in the publication.
What's the difference between M12 A-code, D-code, and L-code?
The keying code designates the function and prevents mis-mating. A-code (standard DC Micro, Bulletin 889D) is for 24V DC sensor and discrete I/O, 3-8 pins at 4 A. D-code is the 4-pin Ethernet keying for 100BASE-TX (Bulletin 1585). L-code (Bulletin 889L) is the 5-pin power keying for 24V DC distribution up to 16 A — used on machine-mount drives, I/O blocks, and stack lights where a DC Micro A-code can't carry the current. This publication covers A-code DC Micro (pp. 30-63) and L-code M12 Power (pp. 64-67).
PUR vs PVC jacket — which should I order?
PVC is the default — lowest cost, 300V or 600V rated, -20 °C minimum, good chemical resistance for typical indoor machinery. Pick PUR when the cordset will flex repeatedly (drag chain, robot arm), be exposed to oil-based cutting fluids, or run outdoors. PUR also has better abrasion resistance and is the correct choice for automotive machining and cold-storage freezer applications (-40 °C). For weld cells, skip PUR and choose ToughLink (TPE) or ToughWeld (CPE) — PUR is rated Fair for weld slag where ToughWeld is rated Fair-Good on a PVC-to-TPE scale and designed specifically to resist sparks.
How do I decode a catalog number like 889D-F4ACDE-2?
Reading left-to-right: 889 = Bulletin 889 cordset/patchcord, D = DC Micro (M12) style, F4 = Female (socket) straight connector, 4-pin, A = US color code, C = 22 AWG PVC cable, DE = the second connector is a right-angle plug (patchcord has a connector on both ends), -2 = 2 m (6.6 ft) length. Swap the -2 to -5 for 5 m or -10 for 10 m. Add S after 889D (→ 889DS) to get a stainless-steel connector body. See the "Catalog Format" breakdown above for every position.
Can I use a Mini 7/8" cordset for DeviceNet?
Yes — 5-pin Mini (Bulletin 889N, 16 AWG STOOW) is the standard ODVA DeviceNet trunk cable: pin 1 = drain, 2 = red (V+), 3 = black (V-), 4 = white (CAN_H), 5 = blue (CAN_L) using Color Code A. Its 8 A / 600V rating comfortably supports a full DeviceNet power budget, and the 1200-psi IP69K washdown keeps the cable sealed in food-and-beverage and automotive plants. For the 5-pin DC Micro equivalent (drop cable), use 889D-F5*-2.
