PowerFlex 525 Embedded EtherNet/IP Adapter User Manual

This user manual covers the EtherNet/IP adapter embedded on the Main Control Board of Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 525 drives. It describes adapter setup, IP address configuration via BOOTP or parameters, I/O and explicit messaging, multi-drive mode, and EtherNet/IP object definitions. Compatible configuration tools include RSLogix 5000 (version 17 or greater), Logix Designer (version 21 or greater), and Connected Components Workbench (version 3 or greater).

Communication Protocols

Supported industrial networks and field buses for the products covered by this publication.

EtherNet/IP Embedded adapter supports implicit I/O messaging (UDP multicast or unicast) and explicit messaging (TCP). Supports CIP connections; unicast requires RSLogix 5000 version 18 or greater, or Logix Designer version 21 or greater with a ControlLogix or CompactLogix controller. RS-485 / DSI DSI port (RS-485) used for handheld HIM and remote options, and for multi-drive mode wiring between the embedded adapter and subordinate drives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set the IP address on the PowerFlex 525 embedded EtherNet/IP adapter?
There are two methods. By default, the adapter is configured to accept an IP address from a BOOTP server. Alternatively, set parameter C128 [EN Addr Sel] to 1 "Parameters," then set parameters C129 through C132 [EN IP Addr Cfg 1...4] to the desired IP address, and cycle drive power to apply the change.
How many drives can share a single EtherNet/IP node in multi-drive mode?
Multi-drive mode allows up to five drives to share a single EtherNet/IP node. The subordinate drives are connected to the embedded adapter via an RS-485 network.
What configuration software is compatible with the embedded EtherNet/IP adapter?
Compatible tools include RSLogix 5000 (version 17 or greater), Logix Designer (version 21 or greater), Connected Components Workbench (version 3 or greater), RSLinx Classic (version 2.50 or later), and the PowerFlex 4-class HIM (22-HIM-A3 or 22-HIM-C2S). The drive's built-in keypad interface can also be used.
What happens when EtherNet/IP communication is disrupted?
By default, parameters C143 [EN Comm Flt Actn] and C144 [EN Idle Flt Actn] cause the drive to fault and stop. These parameters can be configured to instead stop the drive per P045, hold the last Reference and Datalink values, set them to zero, or transmit preconfigured fault values (Logic, Reference, and up to four Datalinks) defined in parameters C145 through C150.
What is Automatic Device Configuration (ADC) and which software versions support it?
ADC is a feature in RSLogix 5000 (version 20 or greater) and Logix Designer (version 21 or greater) that automatically downloads drive configuration data when the Logix controller establishes an EtherNet/IP connection to a PowerFlex 525 drive. ADC is not available in multi-drive mode or for DSI peripherals.
What Datalinks are available and how are they configured?
The adapter supports four 16-bit Datalinks to write data from the network to the drive (configured via C153...C156 [EN Data In 1...4]) and four 16-bit Datalinks to read data from the drive to the network (configured via C157...C160 [EN Data Out 1...4]). Datalink parameters must be assigned in consecutive numerical order starting with the first parameter to avoid unnecessary expansion of the I/O connection.
What is the minimum Requested Packet Interval (RPI) when using a CompactLogix controller?
The manual states the RPI value in the Connection tab should be set to 5.0 milliseconds or greater. Higher values should be used for lower-priority devices to conserve network bandwidth.
