Frequently Asked Questions

How much user memory does each CompactLogix 5370 controller have?
User memory scales with the performance tier. 1769-L16ER-BB1B has 384 KB; L18ER/L18ERM/L18ERM-BB1BK have 512 KB; L19ER has 1 MB; L24ER-QB1B has 750 KB; L24ER-QBFC1B and L27ERM-QBFC1B have 1 MB; L30ER family has 1 MB; L33ER family has 2 MB; L36ERM has 3 MB; L37ERM has 4 MB; L38ERM has 5 MB. Compact GuardLogix -S variants add 0.5–1.5 MB of dedicated safety memory on top of the standard user memory.
Which CompactLogix 5370 controllers support Integrated Motion on EtherNet/IP?
Controllers with an M suffix support Integrated Motion. Axis counts by catalog: 1769-L18ERM-BB1B / L18ERM-BB1BK (1–2 axes), 1769-L27ERM-QBFC1B and L30ERM family (up to 4 axes), L33ERM family (up to 8 axes), and L36ERM / L37ERM / L38ERM families (up to 16 axes). Non-M controllers (L16ER, L18ER, L19ER, L24ER, L30ER, L33ER) do not support integrated motion axes.
How many local I/O modules can a CompactLogix 5370 L3 controller support?
The L3 controller sits leftmost in the local bank and supports up to 3 banks of 1769 Compact I/O modules connected by 1769-CRL1 / 1769-CRR1 expansion cables. L30ER/L30ERM variants support 8 modules; L33ER/L33ERM support 16; L36ERM / L37ERM / L38ERM support 30 or 31 modules. Up to 8 modules per bank right of the power supply; banks can be horizontal or vertical; an end cap is required on the last bank.
What's the difference between a CompactLogix 5370 and a Compact GuardLogix 5370?
A Compact GuardLogix 5370 (S-suffix, e.g., 1769-L30ERMS, L33ERMS, L38ERMS) is a 1769-L3 CompactLogix that adds a certified safety task with dedicated safety memory, achieving SIL CL 3 per EN 62061 / IEC 61508 and PLe per EN ISO 13849-1. Safety and standard logic coexist in one project; during development multiple programmers, online edits, and forcing are allowed. After applying the safety-lock, the safety task is fixed at SIL 3 integrity while standard logic continues to allow online edits and forcing.
Which SD cards are compatible with the CompactLogix 5370?
The 5370 family uses 1784-SD1 (1 GB) or 1784-SD2 (2 GB). The 1784-SD2 ships with the controller; the 1784-SD1 is available separately. Earlier 1784-CF128 CompactFlash is listed for legacy 1769/1768 platforms only. The battery that older CompactLogix platforms required is not needed — the 5370 uses internal energy-storage for clock and memory hold-up (35-day typical hold-up at 25°C).
Is the CompactLogix 5370 rated for hazardous locations?
Yes. All CompactLogix 5370 and Compact GuardLogix 5370 controllers are UL-listed for Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, D (UL File E194810). They also carry ATEX / UKEX Zone 2 Protection "nA" or "ec" II 3 G Ex T4 Gc certifications under EN 60079-0 / 60079-7 / 60079-15. L2 packaged controllers additionally hold IECEx (IECEx UL 21.0112X). TÜV functional safety certification (SIL 3) applies only to the Compact GuardLogix (-S) variants.
