Frequently Asked Questions

Which 1762 expansion modules work on a MicroLogix 1400?
All of them. Bulletin 1762 expansion modules are the shared I/O family for both MicroLogix 1200 and MicroLogix 1400 controllers — the connector, backplane protocol, and power budget are compatible. The 1200 supports up to 6 modules; the 1400 supports up to 7. Check system loading (sum of 5V and 24V bus current plus heat dissipation) before finalizing the stack.
What's the difference between a 1762-IQ16 and a 1762-IQ32T?
Both are 24V DC sink/source input modules. The IQ16 is 16 points, Type 1+, 10…30V DC operating (derates to 26.4V at 55 °C), bus draw 70 mA at 5V DC, in two isolated groups of 8. The IQ32T is 32 points, Type 1 (no "+"), derates to 23 points above 60 °C ambient to keep thermal load in spec, bus draw 170 mA at 5V DC, in four isolated groups of 8. Use IQ32T for dense input panels, IQ16 when per-point diagnostics or cost-per-point matters more than density.
Do I need relay outputs or FET outputs on my MicroLogix 1200?
Relay (OW / L24…WA / L40…WA) is the default for universal AC/DC loads, lamps, contactors, and anything with high inrush — rated 2.5 A per point, 20M mechanical cycles, 5…265V AC / 5…125V DC. Go FET (L24BXB / L40BXB or 1762-OB8/OB16/OB32T) when you need fast switching (PWM / PTO, high-speed outputs), DC-only loads, and no contact wear. BXB controllers give you one (24-point) or five (40-point) FET outputs alongside relay outputs on the same unit.
How do I add Ethernet to a MicroLogix 1200?
The 1200 itself has no on-board Ethernet. Use a 1761-NET-ENI (or NET-ENIW with email/SMTP) bridge on the RS-232 port — it presents the controller as an EtherNet/IP endpoint for RSLogix 500 programming, HMI access, and MSG instructions. If Ethernet is a hard requirement on a new install, consider the MicroLogix 1400 (1766-L32) instead — it has a 10/100 Ethernet port built in.
What does the 'R' suffix (e.g., 1762-L40BWAR) add?
Two things: (1) removable terminal blocks on 40-point controllers (24-point R models keep fixed terminals but add the port), and (2) a second communication port called the Programmer/HMI Port. The HMI port is DF1 Full-Duplex responder only — it answers messages but cannot initiate them, and its parameters (baud, node, framing) are fixed. It's intended for a permanently-mounted HMI while the main Channel 0 stays free for programming.
Which temperature module should I pick — IR4 or IT4?
1762-IR4 is a 4-channel RTD / resistance input — supports Pt 385/3916, Cu, Ni, NiFe, plus 150 Ω and 500 Ω resistance inputs. Use it when you have 2/3/4-wire RTDs. Repeatability is ±0.1 °C (Ni/NiFe) to ±0.2 °C (other RTD types). 1762-IT4 is a 4-channel thermocouple/mV input — supports types B, C, E, J, K, N, R, S, T plus ±50 mV and ±100 mV ranges, with built-in cold-junction compensation. Use it for thermocouples. Shielded cable (e.g., Belden 8761) is required on both.
