Communication Protocols

Supported industrial networks and field buses for the products covered by this publication.

EtherNet/IP Supports 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, and 1 Gbps link speeds. Used for integrated motion, time synchronization, distributed I/O, produce/consume data, and CIP Safety connections. You cannot bridge through the Ethernet front port of another controller to add remote I/O. ControlNet Supports distributed I/O control and produce/consume data between controllers. DeviceNet Supports control of distributed I/O and messaging to devices. Safety I/O can be distributed over EtherNet/IP and DeviceNet only. Data Highway Plus (DH+) Supports messaging to and from other devices. Universal Remote I/O (RIO) Supports control of distributed I/O. CIP Safety SIL 3/PLe-rated version of CIP. Used for safety I/O connections over EtherNet/IP. Safety connections are not allowed to use DNS host names. CIP Security Provides device identity and authentication, data integrity and authentication, and data confidentiality so CIP-connected devices authenticate each other before exchanging data over EtherNet/IP. OPC UA Supported on ControlLogix 5580 and GuardLogix 5580 controllers per publication 1756-UM023. HART Listed as a supported network for control of distributed I/O. Foundation Fieldbus Listed as a supported network for control of distributed I/O. SynchLink Listed as a communication option for ControlLogix 5580 controllers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What controller catalog numbers does this manual cover?
The manual covers ControlLogix 5580 controllers (1756-L81E through 1756-L85E), conformal-coated K variants, NSE No Stored Energy variants, ControlLogix-XT 5580 variants, Process controllers (1756-L81EP, 1756-L83EP, 1756-L85EP), GuardLogix 5580 controllers (1756-L81ES through 1756-L85ES, 1756-L8SP), GuardLogix-XT 5580 variants, and conformal-coated GuardLogix ESK variants.
What safety integrity levels can the GuardLogix 5580 system achieve?
Without a safety partner installed, the GuardLogix 5580 system can achieve SIL 2/PLd (Category 3). With a safety partner installed in the slot immediately to the right of the primary controller, the system can achieve SIL 3/PLe (Category 4) using a 1oo2 architecture.
Which programming languages does the GuardLogix 5580 safety task support?
The safety task on GuardLogix 5580 controllers supports Ladder Diagram (LD) only. Standard tasks on the same controller support Ladder Diagram, Structured Text, Function Block Diagram, and Sequential Function Chart.
What are the minimum system requirements for ControlLogix 5580 and GuardLogix 5580 controllers?
The minimum requirements are a ControlLogix chassis series C (series B functions within a derated temperature range), a ControlLogix power supply, and Studio 5000 Logix Designer software along with Linx-based communication software and ControlFLASH Plus or ControlFLASH software. GuardLogix project editing requires the Professional or Full Edition of Logix Designer or a licensed GuardLogix Safety Editor.
What security standard do the ControlLogix 5580 and GuardLogix 5580 controllers support?
ControlLogix 5580 controllers at firmware revision 32.011 or later and GuardLogix 5580 controllers at firmware revision 37.011 or later support IEC-62443-4-2 SL 1 requirements.
How does the NSE controller handle residual stored energy?
The NSE controller depletes its residual stored energy to 400 µJ or less within 40 seconds after power is turned off. You must wait at least 40 seconds after turning off chassis power before removing the controller. There is no visual indicator when the 40 seconds has expired.
What EtherNet/IP port speeds do the 5580 controllers support, and are there topology restrictions?
The controllers support 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, and 1 Gbps port speeds. You should not mix 1 Gbps and 100 Mbps port speeds within one DLR or linear network. When using legacy 100 Mbps devices with a 1 Gbps controller, a managed switch is required. When switches are used in a star topology, the controller ports should be set to Auto Negotiate.
