1734-AENT POINT I/O EtherNet/IP Adapter Module User Manual

This user manual covers the Allen-Bradley 1734-AENT POINT I/O EtherNet/IP adapter module. It describes installation on a DIN rail, network address configuration using BootP or DHCP, and I/O configuration in RSLogix 5000 software. The manual covers both direct connections and rack-optimized connections, and includes LED status indicator interpretation and adapter web page diagnostics. Only series C POINT I/O modules are compatible with this adapter.

Comm Format Options

None Adapter makes a direct connection to each module referenced by the data
Rack optimization Digital I/O data collected into a rack image; excludes analog and specialty I/O
Listen only - rack optimization Read or verify data only; does not control modules

Communication Protocols

Supported industrial networks and field buses for the products covered by this publication.

EtherNet/IP CIP messages encapsulated within standard TCP/UDP/IP protocol; supports implicit (I/O) and explicit (configuration/messaging) messaging. BootP Used to assign IP address, subnet mask, and gateway address to the adapter. DHCP Factory default is DHCP enabled. Adapter requests IP address from DHCP server on power-up. A fixed IP address is recommended to prevent loss of communication with the controller.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which POINT I/O module series are compatible with the 1734-AENT adapter?
You must use series C POINT I/O modules with the 1734-AENT adapter. Series A or B POINT I/O modules will not work with this adapter.
How do I set the chassis size for the 1734-AENT adapter?
Set the chassis size as the sum of the adapter slot plus the slots of each I/O module in the adapter backplane. For example, the adapter plus 4 I/O modules requires a chassis size of 5. The chassis size must be set using a separate operation; it is not communicated to the adapter during a connection request from the controller. The adapter does not make any I/O connections until it is configured with the correct chassis size.
What happens when I set the thumbwheel switches to 888 and cycle power?
Setting the thumbwheels to 888 and power cycling the module will enable the DHCP Enabled function, set Ethernet link to auto-negotiate, enable the web server, and reset the web page password to the factory default (the word password). Note the original switch values before entering 888 so you can restore them afterward.
What are the limitations of rack-optimized connections?
Rack-optimized connections can only be used with digital I/O modules. Analog or specialty I/O modules require direct connections. All data in a rack-optimized connection is sent at the same time at the RPI rate configured for the 1734-AENT adapter.
Why should I assign a fixed IP address to the 1734-AENT adapter?
When using a DHCP server, the server typically assigns a finite lease time to the offered IP address. When 50% of the lease time expires, the adapter attempts to renew its IP address. There is a possibility the adapter will be assigned a different IP address, causing it to cease communicating with the ControlLogix controller. A fixed IP address prevents this condition.
What should I do if the 1734-AENT adapter reports an overload condition?
Each connection consumes a portion of the adapter microprocessor bandwidth. When insufficient bandwidth is available, the adapter rejects new connection requests. To resolve this condition, increase the RPI for existing connections or decrease the total number of connections.
How does the adapter assign addresses to POINT I/O modules on first power-up?
When power is cycled for the first time, the adapter assigns addresses to every module in the backplane, since all POINT I/O modules ship configured at the same address. All but one module will initially show a solid red Module Status LED. The adapter resets and addresses each module one by one. The time required is proportional to the size of the POINT I/O system.
