Frequently Asked Questions

What voltage does POINTBus run at, and where does it come from?
POINTBus is 5V DC. The communication adapter (1734-AENT, AENTR, ACNR, ADN, APB, etc.) has a built-in DC/DC converter that takes the 24V DC field supply and generates the 5V DC POINTBus rail. Every I/O module on the backplane draws from that 5V rail. The AENT / AENTK adapter supplies up to 1.0 A on the POINTBus output; the AENTR / AENTRK dual-port adapter supplies up to 0.8 A.
How do I know if I need a 1734-EP24DC expansion power supply?
Sum the POINTBus (5V) current draw of every module you plan to install behind a single adapter and compare it against the adapter's POINTBus output (typically 0.8 – 1.0 A). If you exceed the adapter's budget — or you've exceeded the per-node module count (13 – 17 depending on adapter) — add a 1734-EP24DC. The expansion supply takes 24V DC field power and injects a fresh 5V POINTBus rail, letting you add more modules downstream.
What's the difference between a 1734-FPD and a 1734-EP24DC?
The 1734-EP24DC is an expansion power supply — it generates a new 5V POINTBus rail and lets you add more modules beyond the adapter's current budget. The 1734-FPD (Field Potential Distributor) does NOT generate POINTBus power; it breaks the field-power rail so you can start a new field-power group (for example, to isolate a group of modules at a different voltage or to provide a fuse boundary) while leaving POINTBus continuous.
What's the operating temperature range for POINT I/O?
Standard POINT I/O is rated -20…+55 °C (-4…+131 °F) operating, -40…+85 °C nonoperating, 5…95% RH noncondensing. Modules are horizontally or vertically mountable without derating. For hazardous locations, POINT I/O carries Class I Div 2, ATEX / UKEX / IECEx Zone 2 (Ex ec IIC T4 Gc) certification.
Can POINT I/O modules be removed under power?
Yes — every POINT I/O module supports Removal and Insertion Under Power (RIUP). Because field wiring lands on the terminal base (not the module), you can pull a module without disturbing wiring, other modules, or the POINTBus rail. When the replacement snaps in, the adapter auto-downloads its configuration via Automatic Device Replacement (ADR). The one caveat is hazardous-location installations, where you must verify the area is non-hazardous before removing a module under power.
What terminal-base options are there for POINT I/O?
The most common bases are 1734-TB (screw-clamp) and 1734-TBS (spring-clamp) standard bases, 1734-TB3 / TB3S (3-wire sensor bases for inputs with +V and common rails on every terminal), 1734-TOP / TOPS (one-piece bases that combine base + RTB), and 1734-TBCJC (cold-junction compensation base for the 1734-IT2I thermocouple module). All support 22…14 AWG copper wire rated at 75 °C.
