Frequently Asked Questions

Cat 5e or Cat 6 for industrial EtherNet/IP?
Cat 5e (1585-C8TB, 1585J-M8TBJM, 1585D-M4TBJM) is Allen-Bradley's standard industrial Ethernet cable and carries Gigabit (1000BASE-T) across all 4 twisted pairs just like Cat 6. Use Cat 6 (1585J-M8TGJM RJ45 or 1585D-M8UGDM M12 X-code) when you need extra headroom against near-end crosstalk — typically in high-density cabinet installations or when you expect to run 10GBASE-T in the future. For EtherNet/IP DLR, plain Cat 5e is what Rockwell specifies; the ring protocol runs unchanged on either grade.
Does EtherNet/IP Device-Level Ring need a special cable?
No — DLR runs on standard ODVA EtherNet/IP media, which means any 1585 Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable with the appropriate environmental rating for the installation. The ring is formed by two Ethernet ports on each DLR-capable device (for example, 1734-AENTR, 5069-AENTR, or a Stratix DLR-supervisor switch), not by a special cable. For moving machinery use flex-rated teal TPE (1585-C8TB); for fixed cable trays shared with power conductors use 600V foil-shield PVC (1585-C8HB); for halogen-free installations use PUR (1585-C8UB).
When should I use shielded vs unshielded Ethernet cable?
Allen-Bradley rates all 1585 cables to the M3 I3 C3 E3 environment, but the E3 electromagnetic-severity class is where shielding matters. Use unshielded teal TPE (1585-C8TB) inside the control cabinet and in relatively quiet machine zones. Use foil + braid shielded PUR (1585-C8UB) when the cable runs near VFDs, welders, or high-current contactors, or when PROFINET is involved and the specification calls for shielded runs. Use 600V PVC foil shield (1585-C8HB) whenever the Ethernet cable shares a cable tray with high-voltage power conductors — the 600V rating is a code requirement, not just a shielding grade.
M12 D-code or RJ45 — when does On-Machine connectivity justify the jump?
RJ45 is IP20 and meant for the inside of a control cabinet. M12 D-code is IP67 and designed for wet, dusty, or high-vibration applications out on the machine — wash-down food and beverage, outdoor equipment, conveyor lines, and anywhere oils, chemicals, or mechanical abuse can reach. The 1585D cordsets use a polyurethane over-molded housing rated for weld splatter, sunlight, and oils, and the M12 coupling nut is nickel-plated brass so it survives repeated mate / unmate cycles. Use the 1585A-DD4JD bulkhead adapter to transition from IP67 M12 cabling outside a junction box to a standard RJ45 patchcord inside it.
What's the maximum length of an EtherNet/IP channel with 1585 cable?
TIA-568-B limits a copper Ethernet channel to 100 m (328 ft) end-to-end — that's typically 90 m of horizontal cable plus two patchcords of up to 5 m each. 1585 cable spools are offered in 100 m (328 ft), 300 m (984 ft), and 600 m (1969 ft) reels so one reel covers multiple drops. For longer runs, insert a Stratix managed switch or use a fiber backbone — copper Ethernet is a physical-layer spec, not something cable grade can extend beyond 100 m.
Can I terminate 1585 cable in the field, or do I need factory-molded cordsets?
Both options are supported. For fast field termination use the 1585J-M8CC-H RJ45 IDC connector (Cat 6, no tools, reusable up to 5 times) or the 1585J- M8CC-C crimp connector with boot (Cat 5e). For IP67 field termination of M12 D-code use the 1585D-M4DC-H polyamide IDC or 1585D-M4DC-SH / F4DC-SH zinc die-cast shielded IDC — also no tools, rated 10× re-installations. Factory-molded cordsets (1585J-M8HBJM, 1585D-M4TBJM, etc.) give tighter electrical tolerances and a better strain-relief for moving-machine flex applications; field-attachable connectors are the right call for custom lengths and repair work.
