Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between AC-3 and AC-4 duty, and which rating should I use?
AC-3 is the standard squirrel-cage induction motor duty: starting, running, and switching off a motor already up to speed (inrush = 6\u00d7 Ie, break = 1\u00d7 Ie). AC-4 is heavy duty: plugging, reversing, or jogging (inrush and break both at 6\u00d7 Ie). For a 100-C contactor the AC-4 current rating at 200,000 operations is roughly half the AC-3 rating \u2014 e.g., 100-C23 is 23 A AC-3 but only 9 A AC-4. Size up if your load plugs or jogs.
How do I pick a 100-C frame size for a 10 HP motor at 480V?
At 480V three-phase, 10 HP needs roughly 14 A full-load. From Table 10 in publication 100-TD013, 100-C16 is rated 10 HP at 460V AC-3 and 100-C23 is rated 15 HP \u2014 so 100-C16 is the minimum code-correct choice and 100-C23 is the conservative choice with headroom. Always size the overload relay (Bulletin 193) to the motor nameplate FLA, not the contactor rating.
Are 100-C contactors field-convertible to reversing (104-C) assemblies?
Yes. A 104-C reversing assembly is two 100-C contactors plus the 100-KMCH mechanical interlock and 100-KPR wiring kit, pre-assembled at the factory. You can build the same thing in the field from two matching 100-C contactors plus the interlock and wiring kit \u2014 the catalog-number benefit of ordering 104-C is just that it ships pre-wired.
Which overload relays are compatible with Bulletin 100-C contactors?
Bulletin 193 solid-state overload relays and Bulletin 193 bimetallic overload relays mount directly to the line or load side of any 100-C frame. Publication 100-TD013 lists them as the recommended partners throughout the product-line overview. For miniature 100-K contactors, the compatible overload is Bulletin 193-K.
What's a "Mirror Contact" and why do 100S-C contactors have them?
A Mirror Contact is a normally-closed auxiliary contact that is mechanically guaranteed NOT to close if any main pole welds shut \u2014 per IEC 60947-4-1 Annex F. Safety-category feedback circuits rely on this: if the main contacts weld, the N.C. mirror contact stays open, telling the safety controller that the contactor failed. 100S-C safety contactors additionally meet IEC 60947-5-1 Annex L (Mechanically Linked Contacts) and carry SUVA third-party certification.
Can I order a 100-C contactor with coil terminals on the load side?

What is the main terminal tightening torque for a 100-C30 contactor?
