Frequently Asked Questions

Which CompactLogix 5380 controllers support Integrated Motion?
Controllers with an M or P suffix (e.g., 5069-L306ERM, L310ERM, L320ERM, L320ERP, L330ERM, L340ERM, L340ERP, L350ERM, L380ERM, L3100ERM) support Integrated Motion on EtherNet/IP. Controllers without M or P (L306ER, L310ER, L320ER, etc.) do not support integrated motion axes. Axis counts scale from 2 on L306ERM up to 32 on L3100ERM.
What's the difference between CompactLogix 5380 and Compact GuardLogix 5380?
Both are Bulletin 5069 controllers running the Logix 5000 execution engine. Compact GuardLogix adds a certified safety task (1 safety task alongside 31 standard tasks) and safety memory (0.3-5 MB). SIL 2 variants (S2 suffix) achieve SIL 2/PLd Cat 3; SIL 3 variants (S3 suffix, 1oo2 architecture) achieve SIL 3/PLe Cat 4. Standard CompactLogix 5380 has no certified safety task.
Can a CompactLogix 5380 use Compact 5000 I/O modules as remote I/O over EtherNet/IP?
Yes. CompactLogix 5380 supports Compact 5000 I/O modules both locally (attached to the controller backplane) and remotely (over EtherNet/IP via a 5094-AEN2TR or similar adapter). Older Bulletin 1769 Compact I/O modules are not natively supported on 5069 backplanes — use a remote adapter.
What RTB kits fit the CompactLogix 5380 controllers?
The MOD Power connection uses a 4-point RTB and the SA Power connection uses a 6-point RTB. Kit 5069-RTB4-SCREW includes RTB catalog numbers 5069-RTB6-SCREW and 5069-RTB4-SCREW. Kit 5069-RTB4-SPRING includes 5069-RTB6-SPRING and 5069-RTB4-SPRING. Screw terminals use 0.4 N·m (3.5 lb·in) torque and accept 22-16 AWG copper wire.
What SD cards are compatible with CompactLogix 5380 for nonvolatile storage?
Four SD card options: 1784-SD1 (1 GB), 1784-SD2 (2 GB, ships with every controller), 1784-SDHC8 (8 GB), 1784-SDHC32 (32 GB), and 9509-CMSDCD4 (4 GB CodeMeter CmCard SD, for source protection). All are approved by Rockwell for the 5069 controller family.
Is the CompactLogix 5380 rated for Class I Division 2 hazardous locations?
Yes. All CompactLogix 5380 controllers are UL-listed for Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, and D (UL File E194810). ATEX and IECEx certifications extend coverage to Zone 2 gas atmospheres under IEC 60079-15 (Protection "n").
